Pandit Jasraj was one of the most beloved and revered vocalists in the Hindustani tradition. As the foremost exponent of the Mewati Gharana, his voice was celebrated for its extraordinary range — spanning three octaves with effortless grace — and its deeply devotional quality. He began his musical journey as a tabla accompanist for his elder brother before finding his true calling as a vocalist. He innovated the "Jasrangi" jugalbandi format, in which a male vocalist singing a Hindustani raag duets with a female vocalist singing a Carnatic raag in the same melodic space. Pandit Jasraj performed well into his eighties, his voice retaining its luminous quality, and was honored with the Padma Vibhushan. After his passing, a minor planet was named "Panditjasraj" in his honor by the International Astronomical Union.
