About This Artist

Pandit Kumar Gandharva was one of the most original and iconoclastic figures in the history of Hindustani classical music. Born Shivaputra Siddharamayya Komkali, he was a child prodigy who gave his first concert at the age of eleven. In his twenties, he contracted tuberculosis and lost a lung, forcing years of silence and convalescence in the hill town of Dewas in Madhya Pradesh. During this period, immersed in the folk music and natural sounds of the Malwa region, he fundamentally reimagined his approach to singing. When he returned to the stage, his music had transformed — he rejected rigid gharana orthodoxy, incorporated folk melodies and Nirguni bhajan traditions, and developed a lean, intense vocal style unlike anyone before him. His interpretations of raags like Kalavati, Sahana, and Bhimpalasi, and his renditions of Kabir's poetry, remain profoundly moving and utterly singular.

Iconoclastic phrasing, folk-classical fusion, lean intensity
