About This Raag

Malkauns is one of the most ancient and revered ragas in Indian classical music. A pentatonic raga of immense gravity, it omits Re and Pa entirely, leaving five notes — all komal except Sa and Ma — to create a soundscape of profound depth. Traditionally performed in the stillness of late night, Malkauns evokes a mood of deep meditation, inner strength, and contemplation. Its Carnatic equivalent, Hindolam, is equally celebrated in the South Indian tradition.
